Research Interest: Bacterial biofilms and their properties.

Educational Qualifications:

  • B.Sc (Hons.) from University of Calcutta, West Bengal, 2005.
  • M.Sc from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, 2007.

My broad interest lies in bacterial biofilm formation and their applications. Presently, I am studying the bacterial biofilms from the speleothems of caves of Meghalaya as the state has huge deposits of limestone and abundant rainfall and the caves in this state of North-East India are spread over a geographical area of 22,000 sq.km. Some are in fact among the largest caves in Asia which have so far not yet attracted the attention of geomicrobiologists!

My work involves characterization of biofilm exopolysachharides with the help of lectins as they are of enormous economic interest in the food, pharmaceutical and petrochemical industries. I am also interested in investigating any possible role of the biofilm bacteria to precipitate minerals so as to add information to their active biogenic influence in the cave formations.
